South African cuisine is a real melting pot of flavours, influenced by rich cultures that have made this one-of-a-kind cuisine what it is today. This unique blend of cultures has given rise to a variety of flavours, textures, and dishes that tell stories of heritage and tradition. From braais and bobotie, to biltong and boerewors, the variety of dishes is as diverse as the rainbow nation itself. Whether you’re craving the sweet taste of home or are yet to explore South African cuisine, we’ve put together a few (of the very many) classic dishes that make this nation’s food truly unique.

The Beloved Braai

Step into any South African home on a sunny weekend, and you’ll likely find a braai in full swing. This beloved tradition is so iconic that South Africans have made “braai” both a verb and a noun. Whether it’s boerewors, tjops or braaibroodjie, the braai is a quintessential part of South African cuisine, bringing family and friends together to enjoy good food and great company.

A Taste of Cape Malay

When it comes to comfort food with a kick, bobotie takes the cake. This Cape Malay classic is a mouthwatering medley of minced meat, fragrant spices, and a golden egg custard topping. This classic meal takes you to the bustling streets of Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, and is a type of dish that warms both the belly and the soul.

A Pot of Flavour

Potjiekos is a delicious South African dish, cooked in a round, three-legged pot over an open flame. It’s a hearty stew made with a variety of meats, vegetables, and spices, slowly simmered to perfection. Potjiekos is a communal experience, where that wood-fired flavour embodies the essence of South African cuisine – warm, comforting, and deeply rooted in tradition.

A Sweet Slice of History

Of course, no discussion of South African cuisine would be complete without mentioning the iconic melktert, or milk tart. This sweet and creamy dessert, with its buttery pastry crust, drool-worthy custard filling, and a generous dusting of cinnamon is always a winner. With recipes passed down over the decades, this iconic dessert is the go-to to satisfy just about any sweet tooth.

While it’s a staple sweet treat for many South Africans, there’s nothing more appealing than enjoying the milk tart’s irresistible flavours in a mere instant. Enter Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur, a modern twist on this timeless classic. Whether enjoyed neat, over ice, or as a decadent addition to cocktails and desserts, Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur captures the essence of sweet South African cuisine in a bottle.

Raise a Glass to South African Cuisine

South African cuisine is a rich fusion of flavours and influences that reflects the rainbow nation’s cultural heritage. From hearty braais to aromatic boboties and potjies, sweet treats and more, each dish tells a story of tradition, community, and the joy of sharing good food with loved ones. So, the next time you’re at a braai, exploring the streets of Cape Town, or in the mood for something sweet and scrumptious, know that South African cuisine is sure to make your taste buds happy – and with Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur, you experience the irresistible flair of South Africa’s sweet flavours in an instant.

Milk tart, or “melktert” as it’s known in Afrikaans, holds a special place in the hearts of South Africans, cherished for its creamy custard filling and buttery biscuit crust. This beloved dessert has been a staple in South African households for generations, often served on special occasions and family gatherings. With Tant Sannie se Melktert Liqueur, we’re putting a modern twist on this classic favourite, transforming it into bite-sized delights that are as charming as they are delicious.

These delectable treats offer all the creamy richness and nostalgic charm of traditional melktert, infused with the irresistible essence of Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur. By incorporating condensed milk into the mix, these delightful mini desserts offer a concentrated creaminess and a sweet, milky flavour that enhances every bite – oh, yes!

Simple ingredients for melktert perfection

To create these mini melktert delights, you’ll need just a few simple ingredients, including:

300g (1.5 packets) of Tennis biscuits

150g butter, melted

500ml full cream milk

200ml Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur

1 tin condensed milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 eggs, separated

50g cornstarch

50ml water

a pinch of salt

a sprinkle of cinnamon to decorate

The combination of these ingredients results in a creamy, dreamy filling encased in a crisp biscuit crust – a true taste sensation in every bite.

How to make milk tart with condensed milk

Now, onto the method of whipping up a batch of these bite-sized treats:

Begin by breaking the Tennis biscuits into fine crumbs either by hand or using a food processor. Mix in the melted butter until well combined.

Line the base and sides of 12 x 8cm individual tart cases with the biscuit crumbs, pressing them down to compact. Pop them into the fridge or freezer to set while you prepare the filling.

In a medium-sized pot, heat the full cream milk, Tant Sannie se Melktert, condensed milk, and vanilla over medium heat until it reaches boiling point. Make sure to stir continuously until the condensed milk is fully dissolved.

While the milk mixture is heating up, separate the eggs and whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Set aside.

In another bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, cornstarch, water, and salt until smooth.

Once the milk mixture has reached boiling point, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool for about 3 minutes. Slowly add the egg yolk mixture to the pot, whisking vigorously to prevent any lumps from forming.

Return the pot to low heat and continue whisking constantly until the filling thickens, which should take around 5 minutes.

Next, add the whipped egg whites to the milk mixture and whisk for an additional 2 minutes until well combined.

Pour the filling into the lined pastry cases and allow them to cool to room temperature before transferring them to the fridge to set completely.

Once chilled, sprinkle the mini milk tarts with cinnamon for that final touch of flavour and serve.

Versatile and delish

One of the best things about these mini milk tarts is their versatility. Whether enjoyed as a sweet treat with afternoon tea, served as a delightful dessert at dinner parties, or simply savoured as a midday indulgence, this milk tart with condensed milk recipe is sure to impress.
There’s no denying that South African cuisine is a diverse blend of cultures, traditions, and flavours. From savoury dishes like bobotie and boerewors to sweet treats such as koeksisters and malva pudding, every classic South African dish tells a story of heritage and community. And speaking of the sweet treats, few South African desserts hold as much cultural significance as the South African melktert, or milk tart. This iconic dessert traces its roots back to the early 1600s when Dutch settlers first landed in the Cape of Good Hope, and it’s captured the hearts and taste buds of generations.

A taste of history

The story of the South African melktert is a tale of tradition, passed down through generations. With its origins in the Dutch kitchens of the Cape, this sweet treat has evolved over centuries, adapting to the changing tastes and influences of the times. From its humble beginnings to its status as a beloved national dessert, the melktert has remained a symbol of South African pride and ingenuity.

Comfort in every bite

Although the crust of a South African melktert is typically made from a delicate short-crust pastry, many South Africans go down the easy route of using crushed tennis biscuits or ready-made puff pastry. However, the essence remains the same – a buttery, flaky crust that holds the creamy custard filling. And while some may debate the choice of a crustless South African melktert, there’s no denying the simple pleasure of a well-made pastry.

Creamy indulgence

Mmm… the heart and soul of South African melktert – the creamy custard filling, brimming with the richness of milk, sugar, and eggs. Thickened with cornflour for a velvety texture that melts in your mouth, this creamy concoction reflects the Dutch influence that permeates South African cuisine. The Dutch influence shines through in the generous use of milk, a nod to the dairy farmers who settled the Cape of Good Hope centuries ago. And let’s not forget the cinnamon – introduced to Dutch settlers by the Japanese, it adds a subtle warmth and depth of flavour that ties the deliciousness of this dessert together.

A dusting of delight

No melktert is complete without a generous dusting of cinnamon on top, a final flourish that adds visual appeal to this mouthwatering dessert. Served sliced, chilled, or at room temperature, each bite of South African melktert is a journey of nostalgic flavours that dance on the palate and warm the soul.

Tant Sannie’s twist

In the hearts of South Africans, the love for traditional milktart runs as deep as the roots of our culture, and Tant Sannie se Melktert Liqueur provides the perfect twist on this timeless classic. With its infusion of irresistible milk tart flavours and a hint of sweet cinnamon spice, this creamy liqueur carries the essence of South African melktert in every sip. Whether poured over ice, mixed in a cocktail or whipped up in a decadent dessert, Tant Sannie se Melktert Liqueur brings the warmth of nostalgia and the taste of home to life, instantly.

Roll out 250g of the pastry on a sheet of baking paper to about 25cm square. Scatter over half of the almonds and dust with half of the icing sugar. Cover with another sheet of baking paper and bake for 30 minutes until golden brown and crisp. Repeat with the remaining pastry. Allow both pastry sheets to cool completely.

Step 2: Prep the custard filling

Soften the gelatin in cold water. In a saucepan, combine the milk, Tant Sannie se Melktert Liqueur, double cream, vanilla extract, cornflour, custard powder, egg yolks, and caster sugar. Whisk continuously over low heat until the custard thickens and becomes silky smooth. Remove from heat, add the softened gelatin, and stir until dissolved.

Step 3: Assemble the custard slices

Line the base and sides of a 20cm square tin with baking parchment. Trim one pastry sheet to fit the tin, almond-side down. Spread the custard filling evenly over the pastry. Trim the second pastry sheet into eight rectangles and place them on top of the custard, almond-side up. Press down gently to adhere. Chill for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.

Step 4: Serve and enjoy this classic South African dessert

Once chilled, lift the custard slice from the tin and cut into individual portions. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

Just a side note – our Tant Sannie Custard Slices are best enjoyed within 24 hours, while the pastry is still crisp and delish!

Take your South African dessert up a notch

With Tant Sannie se Melktert Liqueur, every bite of our Custard Slices becomes a celebration of South African flavour and tradition.
