Tant' Sannie's Hot Chocolate

Winter has arrived and the first feels of chills has us longing for a steamy cup of hot chocolate. Not just any hot chocolate though, but the deliciously thick, creamy and boozy kind. If you've never made your own hot chocolate at home, you are seriously missing out – it's so much better than any store-bought powdered mix, plus quick and simple to make! This recipe gives the classic milk hot chocolate an exciting new twist by infusing it with the spicy decadence of Tant Sannie se Melktert, SA's hottest new cream liqueur. Laced with traditional milk tart flavours of cinnamon spice and condensed milk, it is a perfect fit for the creamy cocoa richness of the hot chocolate. Enjoy this adults-only delight after dinner in front of the fireplace with your loved one after the kids have gone to bed – there is no better way to relax after a long, wet winter's day!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup full-cream milk
  • 100 g high-quality (we used 70% cocoa) milk chocolate, chopped
  • 100 ml Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • whipped cream and chocolate/toffee sauce for garnish

METHOD

In a medium saucepan, heat the milk until hot and bubbly but not boiling. Stir in the chocolate until melted. Bring to a boil and add Tant Sannie se Melktert liqueur as well as vanilla extract. Cook until thickened, about 30 seconds. 

Remove from the heat. Let cool for a few minutes then top with whipped cream, chocolate and/or toffee sauce.
